Preston Market has teamed up with Laneway Learning to bring fun and affordable workshops to Darebin. We have something for everyone, from beginner’s crochet, to sword fighting and reducing food waste.

We also have FREE activities for kids every Saturday, with colouring in, puzzles and arts and crafts. Make a mask, create your own crown or join the circus.

So why not make a day of it? Do your shopping and learn something new, while the kids are entertained.

SEPTEMBER WORKSHOPS

Urban Sketching

Remember beaten up sketchbooks filled with drawings of places visited, notes scrawled on the side? Urban sketching is an exciting art form that is about creating personal artworks on location in cities, towns and villages that you live in or travel to. And then sharing it!

In this art class we will learn about urban sketching and put pencil to paper to draw your favourite places around Preston Market.

Crochet: A Beginner’s Guide

Marinated Cheese: Epicurus’ Delight

Back in the time of the great Greek philosophers, Epicurus said “plain fare gives as much pleasure as a costly diet” but then he was the sort of guy who believed that if you didn’t expect too much you wouldn’t be disappointed.

So, we are going to take Epicurus’ plain cheese and make it something special by marinating it. Choosing from an array of spices and herbs, the feta, goat and bocconcini cheeses will be the toast of the Forum.

Sword Fighting: Medieval Martial Arts

Movies and TV shows are full of knights that fight like turtles with clunky heavy swords, and nimble characters that run rings around them with their rapiers. But what was sword fighting really like?

Have a go at old-fashioned sword fighting and learn about the different types of martial arts in Europe, and the different contexts they were used in: from judicial duels to sporting tournaments and back-alley brawls. Find out about sword weights and types and you might even learn a technique or two!

Woodcut Printmaking

Woodcut printmaking is a simple, cheap and fun technique that can be used to create multiple prints.

In this class, we’ll have a brief look at the evolution of woodcuts, followed by a demonstration of how to carve the wood. Everyone will create their own woodcut and then print it by using their feet to ‘dance’ on the fabric and make a print without use of a press.

As Seen on MTV! Michael Jackson’s Thriller

In this class we’ll be prepping for Halloween by getting in touch with our inner zombies, with Michael Jackson’s Thriller! To start out, we’ll warm up through some basic moves before diving into the choreography which will have you shuffling, groaning, and getting funky, scary 80s style. Just in time for Halloween!

Macramé via Upcycled Planters

In this class you will learn the basic knots of macrame making, and we’ll go through some of the common knots that can be used to make macrame for textiles. After learning the basic knots, we will use them to make a basic macrame plant hanger.

Bring your own jar or vase of about 15cm diameter and we will learn how to adjust the planter according to the size of the pot or vase.

Upcycled Rug Making

We all have lots of ratty t-shirts around the house, not suitable for the op shop and too “holey” to even wear as pyjamas… Let’s give these a new life by learning how to make beautiful upcycled rugs with them!

We’ll learn how to make your own t-shirt yarn so you can turn those daggy old t-shirts into beautiful crafts!
